The Gargoyle - Andrew Davidson

My cousin, Faiza, read The Gargoyle, back in May and raved about the book. You can read her review here. Even though it was May, she claimed it was the best book of 2010. (I wonder if she still thinks that)

Well, ever since then, I've had the book on my list.

I finally got around to reading it.

Thank you Faiza. This has to be one of the best books I've ever read.

I've been bringing my Kindle to school, and reading any chance I got. I had a lot of mates ask me what the book is about. And I'm always stumped. It's not my vampire lust, it's not about the war, it's about a teenage girl, etc.

How do you explain this amazing book?

We never learn the narrator's name. The book begins with him being in a car accident and burnt. Severely. He's recovering in the hospital, planning his suicide, when he meets Marianne Engel. Hmmmm... can I call this a love story? According to Marianne Engel, she has been searching for our narrator for centuries. After their last life together. He's a badly burnt porn star, and she's possibly schizophrenic. Marianne Engel shares her story of love, that spans centuries, and other characters. Each story is heartbreaking.

Andrew Davidson gets us to feel for this drug addicted, burnt porn star. Each of his stories touches your heart. He switches from the narrator's voice, to Marianne Engel's. And he does it easily.

It's been awhile since I've been this excited about a book. Or rather, a non-vampire book. I'm never one to tell someone you must read this (asides from my students), but I really need to recommend this book.
