After reading 2 vampire books, one of them being very intense, it took me a day or two to get into this one. And it was worth it. Water for Elephants had a nice calming effect on me.
Jacob Jankowski is about to write his final exams at Cornell, and join his father's veterinarian practice, when he learns his parents have been killed in a car accident. Not only is he now an orphan, but his parents had mortgaged the house, and he is penniless. What to do? Well join a circus of course! Ok, so it didn't happen that way. Jacob jumps a train, which turns out to be a circus. But still.... he ran away and joined the circus! How cool is that!
The story jumps back and forth between the present day, and the past. Jacob is now in his 90s, living in a nursing home, awaiting a family member to come visit and take him to the circus. While he waits, he recalls his story, his life, the circus, and meeting his beloved.
I love all the little stories with the book. The romance between Jacob and Marlena. The animal story, with Rosie, the Polish speaking elephant. The characters in the circus. I feel all tingly and happy.

glad to hear you liked it. we are waiting for it to come out as a movie here in north america. hopefully it'll be on dvd when you come to toronto for christmas.
@faiza - We went to the cinema last weekend and saw a poster for it, so hopefully it will come here soon
